As a young American finding your way into the world, committing to a lifetime of learning and personal growth will help shape you to become the person you aspire to be.
For most students, college is a practical path to professional success. By gaining a degree, you receive career training, take part in professional skills programs and technical courses that you can leverage in the future as you apply for your dream job. But with the cultural shift in the workplace, the goal now is to become professionally and strategically well-rounded. You may ask how does one become professionally and strategically well-rounded. We will endeavor to answer that question by featuring some of the most liberal colleges in America.
Going to college is no longer just the logical answer to what comes after high school. A college education is what everyone aspires. It is a privilege that more and more young American adults pursue. We continue the fight to make higher education an expectation to all rather than an exception. But it is a daunting fact that gaining a college education may be elusive to most, and the fight for admission is grueling. In fall 2018, 16.6 million fortunate students enrolled in degree-granting postsecondary institutions. This accounts for a 26% increase from the 13.2 million students enrolled in 2000. And according to statistical data projection, this number will continue to increase through the years. We want you to be included in these numbers so you can forge your path in the direction of hope, empathy, and respect to all.
Why enroll in a liberal college?
If you want to achieve a well-rounded education, going to a liberal college may be the right choice for you. You get a broad knowledge and core competencies you will need to excel in whatever field you choose. You will gain critical thinking skills and immerse yourself in the complexities of the global perspective. Because of the unique class size, which will most likely be composed of a highly diverse student community, you will gain a diverse worldview. This will make you more open to change and welcoming and tolerant towards other cultures, races, or ethnicities that may be different from your own.
Yes, you might feel overwhelmed because liberal colleges encourage co-curricular activities. However, this is one of the many avenues you can use to your advantage. Engage with your peers and teachers and build a network you can tap into in the future. More often than not, liberal colleges are small colleges. It is a tight-knit community of like-minded individuals willing and open to engaging with you.
Why not take advantage of this? Join clubs and organizations for you to meet other people to expand your circle. Gain the freedom to choose the classes that you find interesting. Expect that you will meet your equals as liberal higher education institutions attract forward-thinking students. Together, you can foster productive and creative higher learning prospects in an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environment.
Which college should you attend?
With over 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States, you and your parents must consider an important factor, aside from cost, which is the institution’s core values. College will prepare you to become a skilled professional. It is also central in shaping the kind of adult you will become. You mature in college. Part of this process includes gaining new perspectives by building new relationships with your peers, professors, mentors, and other people that may come from different walks of life. Most importantly, you will have a stronger sense of politics and how it works during your college years.
Arguably, every person’s first experience in politics takes place in the classroom. We were asked to pick our class president or representative since the first grade, and this has ripened into a more competitive, often aggressive school election campaign as we got older. This will only heighten in college.
College campuses have their own set of politics. One can deduce these from taking a look at the types of causes college students are focused on, whether it is the environment, climate change, freedom of speech and expression, medical and mental health, disaster response, social justice, and more. The campus is a fertile ground for people with a broad range of philosophies to come together. However, certain schools lean much farther to the left of the political spectrum. A scale made up of two opposite sides than others.
Liberals
Americans are highly divided politically. There are two predominant political parties in the United States – the Democratic Party or DNC and the Republican Party or GOP. You can either be a Democrat or a Republican or choose not to affiliate with any of the two. But it is without question that these two political parties cause the bipartisan divide in the country.
Democrats and Republicans differ in many issues and often express their views 180 degrees apart. Specifically, the two are opposites on their fundamental political values. The two parties disagree on issues and principles associated with governance, immigration, race, climate change, environment, public health, and national security. They disagree on how the government should handle everything that makes up America.
Research has shown that among the Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters, most or 47% of them describe their political views as liberal. This data is not surprising, especially when we consider the results of the recent national elections. It is, therefore, safe to say that democrats share liberal ideologies in their platform of government. Liberals believe in fundamental human rights, freedom, prosperity, public health, education, and public safety. They believe in the commonwealth – equity instead of equality. How we achieve them without leaving any person behind is the primary consideration. A sure way to ensure that we breed liberals for the future generation of leaders is through higher education.
Liberal Colleges in America
The goal of higher education goes beyond the cognitive and intellectual development of students. From a social learning perspective, researchers believe that colleges are critical in the shaping of young adults’ values, personal outlook, attitudes, and beliefs. More so, colleges impact students’ political views.
It comes as no surprise that liberal colleges tend to be in liberal states. Data shows that among the most liberal states are Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, Washington, New York, District of Columbia, California, and Oregon. Notably, New York, California, and Oregon are the only three among the liberal states that house more than one college in its jurisdiction. Also, most liberal colleges were founded as women’s colleges. Research has found 56% of American women identify as Democrats or lean towards the spectrum’s left side.
