According to the Lumina Foundation, 34% will require a bachelor’s, and 9% will need a master’s or higher. Because of the rising demand for bachelor’s degree holders, the educational system in South Carolina, like other states, focus on making post-secondary education more accessible to the prospective students. Its online learning sector is desirable; therefore, more out-of-state students enroll. In addition, South Carolina’s in-state tuition rate is lower than the national average. According to the NCES, in the 2015-2016 school year, the state’s average tuition rate for public four-year courses totaled just over $19,000.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education promotes accessible, affordable, and quality education. By leveraging coordination, regulation, advocacy building and oversight, the South Carolina CHE ensures that every state standard is imposed and followed by the 74 post-secondary institutions in the state. Under the direction of the General Assembly, it is projected that the enrollment rate will rise exponentially. Consequently, graduation and success rate will follow.
During the Fall semester of 2017, a total of 238,567 students were recorded through a headcount. This is the total number of enrollees in the 33 public four- and two-year institutions, as well as in the 22 independent schools in the state. Enrollment in public post-secondary institutions has increased by 1.5% compared to the number of enrollees in 2016.
For the benefit of students who are actively searching for their preferred college, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education launched GetSmartSC.
